Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease

Disease Information

Inviragen's development of an EV71 vaccine aims to address the growing unmet medical need for a safe and effective preventative treatment of Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease (HFMD) due to EV71 infection.  Although EV71 is only one of the aetiological agents responsible for HFMD, it is more often attributed to causing dangerous and potentially fatal infections.  We are developing a prophylactic EV71 vaccine, which targets children before they enter child-care centers, in order to reduce transmission. Currently, there is no vaccine available and treatments are limited to palliative care.

Inviragen has carried out extensive studies to select the ideal EV71 vaccine candidate for development.  We have consistently shown that an inactivated whole viral particle based vaccine, when appropriately inactivated to ensure maintenance of important epitopes, provides the full repertoire of antigenic structures necessary for a broadly protective vaccine.  We grow a highly immunogenic proprietary EV71 virus strain in cell culture, inactivate the virus and then purify the inactivated whole virus particle.  Our state of the art manufacturing process yields a highly purified vaccine preparation free from process contaminants, preservatives and unnecessary excipients.  In this way we can ensure that we are developing a vaccine that meets stringent world-class standards of consistency and purity.
